Dear Mr.Wilcox (Secretary of the China Association),

I have to thank you for your letter of the 2nd inst. and have meanwhile read the pamphlet you were good enough to enclose. I much appreciate the straightforward frankness with which you refer to your hesitation to accept me as the all-British article.

As you say, the name of my

firm is apt to cause doubt, as people cannot know that Mr.Rehders left it 25 years ago (in 1890) and has no connection with it of

any kind.

Speaking of the Baltic, you may be interested to know what position I took up in regard to the question of signing the memorial to the Lord Mayor. I am enclosing a copy of the letters

I am glad to observe that your pamphlet coincides, on

more than one point, with my own attempt at dispassionate reason- ing, even praising our enemies where praise appears due to them.
